MEDIUM (TV series) on Amazon Prime – starring Patricia Arquette, Jake Weber, Miguel Sandoval and David Cubitt.
MEDIUM is a crime drama series whose main character, Allison DuBois (played by Patricia Arquette), is a medium employed as a consultant by the Phoenix District Attorney’s Office. Yep, she sees dead people (mostly in her dreams) and they help her give the police information that solves crimes.
I know it sounds cheesy, but this is a fantastic show. It is based on the experiences of real-life medium Allison DuBois, who claims she has worked with police departments across the country. It was created by Glenn Gordon Caron (the man behind the TV series Moonlighting), and his ability to create magical television is abundantly in evidence here.
As the show opens, Alison is interning in the District Attorney’s office and hoping to go to law school. She and her husband, Joe, have three young daughters and live in Phoenix, Arizona. Joe is an aerospace engineer.
As the District Attorney (played by Miguel Sandoval) and his lead investigator (played by David Cubitt) work to build cases for the DA to prosecute, Allison’s presence in the DA’s office leads to her using her gift to help the (initially very reluctant) investigator solve crimes. She goes from being an intern to being a consultant, and decides to postpone law school.
Allison’s family is a big part of the show. Her husband Joe (played by the wonderful Jake Weber) and their three daughters (all of whom inherited Allison’s gift) all have their own lives, which create conflict and lots of loving hurly-burly.
This is an enchanting series. The writing is terrific and the actors are all perfectly cast. It’s one of those rare shows where someone made all the right decisions and the cumulative effect is superlative.
If you have Amazon Prime and you like crime dramas, you might want to give this show a try. I loved it.
