Lately I’ve been watching Escape to the Country on Netflix. This is a British TV show where every week the show host helps a different couple who want to sell their current house and escape to a new life in the British countryside.
The interesting thing about this show is that these are ordinary middle-class people, looking for a house they can afford. Their budgets range from about 200,000 pounds to one million pounds, with the majority seeming to be around 300,000 to 700,000 pounds. House prices in Britain are not cheap.
Several of the couples also wanted to give up their current jobs and buy a property that could provide them with an income. The various options presented to them included properties with “holiday lets” (cottages or apartments on the property that could be rented by the week to vacationers), bed and breakfast potential, and even a tea shop.
Since most British house shows we see in the US seem to be about the upper class and stately homes, it’s really interesting to see the kinds of houses that middle class people purchase in Britain.
The houses are all over Britain, and it’s also interesting to see the different areas.
I liked this show a lot.
